Discussion: What Are You Looking For In A Character?

Yesterday I made a post about three questions I sent to a player. Today I have a question for you all. As GMs and Players what is it you are looking for in the characters in your game? Do you like your players to be pro-active to the point of ridiculousness? Do you like deep, rich back stories? Do you look for quirks?

Is there a kind of character you prefer? The strong silent type? The team member? The gung-ho fighter?

Everyone looks for something different, and what we look for changes over time. So, what are you currently looking for?

  1. I do like PCs with rich back stories & quirks. Players that take things like that on tend to be enthusiastic about the setting & their character and, all things being equal, are more likely to not just play their character as themself.

Back stories, quirks, roleplaying & enthusiasm IMO helps the whole group (including the GM) with suspension of disbelief & immersion in a make-believe universe.

All that being said, I think you quickly learn as GM to not get TOO carried away with that vision of the "perfect" campaign. You learn to enjoy that you have a group who enjoys RPG'ing, that despite having a life is striving to be there every session & whose company you enjoy. If they do read what you put on the campaign website, that's just gravy.
