Flashback: Bad Players

Today is going to be a short post. I apologize for that, but it is late and I am tired. I'll try to get a more full length post up Friday to make up for it for you guys. That said, I have expanded my readership here over the past nearly 2 years, and so I figured I'd ask you guys this question.

What are your thoughts on Bad Players?

For me, the advice on Bad Players and RP advice was summed up quite nicely in a youtube video by John Wick. You can find it in this post, or by watching the vid at the bottom of the update.

  1. On the one hand, I don't think I've ever really gamed with a truly bad player. Maybe back in High School there were some shennanigans that irked me, but when you are playing with old friends, you get the silliness that goes along with them.

If a new player joined my current group that was disruptive or a real pain the arse, the only solution is to tell them what the problem is, and escalate as required. Same deal with a 'bad' player at a Con, but with an accelerated time table.

  2. Sometimes it's not that easy to drop a bad player. They may be friends or family with other players that are really good players and the good players want them there.

There's a lot of advice on how to improve your players as a GM and I find that helpful. Sometimes, the GM is just not providing the player with what they want out of a story. Sometimes they're being jerks on purpose. Sometimes they just need to mature. I know that I did. I've said it before, I was a rules lawyer and I would get into arguments about GM rulings when I disagreed. I had to mature and understand that everyone was there to have fun and arguments are no fun.
