Discussion: Fantasy Flight Games's L5R Beta

If you're not aware - in which case where have you been lately? - Fantasy Flight Games released a beta of their Legend of Five Rings RPG to the public at large to get feedback and test the system out. You can find more out about that here.

What I want to ask today is, have you tried it? Have you read it? What are your thoughts?

FFG has released several surveys about the game, and even revealed that less than 50% of people who had downloaded the beta had had a chance to play it yet. Tragically, I count among that number, but I have been reading and following along. I just have my own L5R game to finish running before I can try out a new system.

That said, I'm very intrigued by what I've read. I'm a big fan of any game helping the player make their character have more depth and so the Passions and Anxiety Advantages/Disadvantages make me really happy. I'm also a fan of the strife system and outbursts, and think they would make for fun additions to a game.

At the same time, I'm also curious if the change from those things will be all good. L5R has worked for 15 years without having to drag the inner plight of the self vs. duty out into the light. I suppose it doesn't have to be front and center all the time, and it should just add to those moments. Still, change can be scary, but mostly I'm intrigued.

The real test will come when I get to finally play or run it, but until then FFG has my attention. And I'm very pleased with what I've seen so far. How about you?

  1. I am really excited by it. Character creation takes time, but is fun to do and fits with how I make characters as is. I'm excited to try playing.
