Never Enough Games

Out of curiosity, what do you do when you want to run more games than you reasonably have time for? Because lately the bug has been hitting me a lot. I love the two games I'm running, I don't want to end them, but there are so many other games out there right now that I also really want to run. It's pretty much the reason I made the "Campaign Proposals" series on here, but I'm not even sure if it's enough right now.

The sad thing is I already game a lot. Every two weeks has 4 game sessions, with 3 of them fitting into one week. Fridays are split between a Dresden Files game I'm in and an L5R game I run. Every other wednesday is my Shadowurn game. Every other Saturday is an L5R game I'm in. Beyond that there is a "when we can" Edge of the Empire game I get to play in. So, effectively 5 games really. And yet, it's not enough.

See, I want, and I mean really really want, to run an Edge of the Empire game of my own. I also want to run some game using the FATE Core system. Beyond that there are other systems I own that I've never really gotten a chance to fully play or I randomly get a strong urge to run. Most notably with Pirates of the Spanish Main and Pendragon. All this without mentioning the random urges I get to run Super Hero games, or basically whatever else has my fancy.

Fighting them off is easier sometimes than others, and with some of the ideas I've been able to write a Campaign Proposal and be done with it. The weird part is that with some of the games it is the world and the story that won't go away. With others it is purely the mechanics that I want to play with.

So what do you do to keep the ideas under control when they keep hitting you? This was so much easier when I had planned ends to my games and wasn't going for more campaign style games...

  1. What controls me on the player side is I don't have ready access to that many games. I'd be vulnerable to playing in a L5R, EoE or Savage Worlds game (and probably others) but I don't know someone who's running one. I live in a heavily populated area (SF Bay Area) so there could well be a game out there with space if I bore down and looked & didn't mind playing with strangers.

On the GM'ing side, I'm restrained by my inability to prepare for sessions quickly. I'm still new at it so maybe I'll get more efficient.

I run a bi-weekly Dark Heresy game that I really put my back into. I play in a Call of Cthulhu game which plays every 2-4 weeks.

My goal beyond that is to start GM'ing at least one session at game conventions, of which there are about 4-5 in my area throughout the year. And then to run one-offs in games that interest me with friends.

So my suggestion to you A.L. is to supplement your current solid schedule with a periodic QuickStart one-off in the games you're dying to play.
