Fate Core

I don't often take the time to get off my soap box and try to pimp a product. In fact, I don't think I've done it more than maybe three or four times over the course of the going on 2 years that this blog has been around for. However, currently there is a game which deserves your attention up on kickstarter. The game? Fate Core. Read on to hear my reasons why you want to give this game a shot.

The Fate System
The Fate System is one of the few game systems that is literally kicking ass and taking names when it comes to the table top RPG mold. You can find elements of the Fate system in almost every new released RPG game. Ever use an Aspect? It may have been called a distinction, quality, or tag in the game you played. Yeah, those all come from Fate.

In a nutshell the Fate system is a relatively rules light system that keeps a narrative and cinematic focus on the action. However, unlike other games of this type it doesn't do it by fighting for narrative control but in a way more reminiscent of traditional RPGs. Death can come easy in a fate system. Really, trust me, it is easy to get killed. However, you - the player - also have control over that. You can escape death by instead taking yourself out of the fight. The cost? Well, now you're out of the fight and the GM has control of the situation.

It's through these checks and balances that Fate helps to deliver a powerful narrative and let the GM, and game group, decide just what is and isn't going to happen.

Personal Experience
So far I only have experience with the Fate system through the Dresden Files RPG. In that RPG though I've seen the system handle everything from gunfights to werewolf brawls beautifully. It is one of the few systems where a social character can be a factor in a fight by being a loud mouthed annoyance. Simply put, the system works.

The Best Part
The best part of this kickstarter is that you don't have to wait. If you're a backer you get to see what they have for the game in draft now. Which means you can get kicking with it right away. Furthermore, the system is set up as a core system (hence, Fate Core) so expect to be able to use it for multiple genres - and Fate can handle multiple genres very well.

Give it a shot. You just might be surprised.

  1. I'm going to add my endorsement to this offer. Having experienced Diaspora, read Bulldogs which I participated in the Kickstarter for, and of course Dresden Files which I'm running. The quantity of stuff offered in the Fate Core Kickstarter is amazing. The quality also I expect will be awesome. I can vouch for the quality of everything in Bulldogs, and the author of that is contributing an adventure. Dressden File is also a great system and it is by Evil Hat, so go, kick in. Be part of something amazing.

I'm just sad I missed the random dice level because I'm a dice whore.

  2. They added more dice slots to the kickstarter today. So if you want the dice, go get 'em before they're gone again.
