Discussion: Favorite Kind of Game

We have talked a lot about different kinds of games here. So, with that in mind, I want to know what your favorite kind of game is. what themes do you like seeing? What motifs? What kind of action?

For me, I tend to like epik games with some drama involved. I like some comedy, but want the world to be serious and have a feeling of consistency to it. Beyond that, I'm fairly open all in all. How about you?

  1. Hm... This is a GM's point of view... I hardly ever get to play, so that's the context...

I like multi-genre, certainly. Something that surprises and breaks convention at its very root. Even games in a pure genre will often feature a twist like dimensional travel or Lovecraftian aliens. And it probably explains why I've gravitated to things like superhero games and Doctor Who, where you can do a lot of things.

My personality and that of my players (we're mostly improv players) makes it so it will always turn to comedy. I'd LIKE to play something deadly serious some day, but it just can't be done with the people I play with. I'm not complaining, I LIKE the comedy (character comedy, not spoof). Spending time on character more than combat and rolling dice is definitely called for. Thematically, the big ones are always nice. You know, corruption and redemption.

As a player, I like flexibility. I like thinking outside the box, and a GM who will reward me for doing so. So I try to be the same from the other side of the screen.

    Does that answer the question?
