Discussion: Are You A Writer?

Not really gaming related, but with this being November I find myself curious. How many of you consider yourselves writers and story tellers as well as gamers? I know a remarkable number of gamers who also like to write. Maybe not as a career goal, but they do enjoy telling the occasional tale and spinning the occasional yarn.

Personally, my goal is to do it professionally one day. Either as a designer of games or just writing stories, but we'll see how that plays out.

If you are a writer, are you doing NaNoWriMo this year? If so, what are you writing? I'm giving it a shot (it is my third NaNo) and am writing a hopefully YA fantasy story about a young boy being accepted into a prestigious Warrior's Guild. The first problem being that his family is traditionally an alchemists family. We'll see how it goes. So far it has been fun, but I'm only about 4-5k in.

  1. The best part about the NaNoWriMo experience is the community. Make sure you follow @nanowordsprints if you are on twitter, as they have some awesome ideas to inspire creativity.

  2. I too aspire to be published in some creative writing venue, and am working on a manuscript (though it's an alternate history sci-fi thriller). I'm not doing nanowrimo because I just never have the time in November as the college semester begins to heat up.

  3. I've been trying to write a novel for quite a while now. I go in fits and starts. Right now I'm stalled.

I put my chapters up as pages on the blog and I've gotten some positive feedback. I've also been told I don't do enough character development but I'm 14 chapters in and I'm only about half way through the story so I might add some development on a second draft.

  4. I'm doing NaNo in a halfassed way this year, since I have a ton going on.

Based on a recent survey of my fans, a great majority of them are multiclassed gamer/writers.

  5. I've participated in NaNoWriMo about six times. Finished twice. I'm blogging this year, so it isn't likely I'll finish. But it's the practice of writing that I'm working on. I figure the more I do it, the better I'll get.

I think that helps my GMing. Creating plot ideas, and being open to input and ideas from my players for inspiration are good mental exercise at the very least.

    Good luck in your writing!

  6. Definitely agree Anarkeith. I'm blogging and working a couple jobs, so not sure if I'll finish. but just being writing again feels good. It clears the head so to speak, letting other ideas come in.

    Good luck with your project!
